Registration certificate - Tartózkodási engedély ügyintézés

If you, your family member, or your employee is an EEA citizen (i.e. amember of the European Union or a citizen of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein or Switzerland), you must apply for a registration certificate if you are staying in Hungary for a longer period of time.

Many people are not aware that although the EEA citizen is entitled to free movement and residence in the member countries, long-term stays, i.e. stays longer than 90 days within 180 days, must be reported. This is not an option, but an obligation. EEA citizens must report their stay no later than the 93rd day after entry.

Information about submitting an application:

The application must be submitted in Hungary at the immigration police at the place of residence and the card will be received immediately by the applicant if complete documents are submitted.

Notifiable accommodation is also required, because the applicant will also receive a residential address card in addition to the registration certificate, which will be sent by post.

When applying for a registration certificate, it must be proven for what purpose the applicant wants to stay in Hungary and this must be supported by appropriate documents.

job search
individual entrepreneurship
owner or manager of a company
studies
family member (spouse or child)
other purpose

It must also be proven that the applicant can finance a living during his/her stay in Hungary, and proof of the existence of comprehensive health insurance must also be submitted.

GOOD TO KNOW: Although an EEA citizen can freely take up work in Hungary, i.e. a work permit is not required to work, the beginning and end of work without a permit must be reported to the employment department of the government office of the place of work.
